ABOUT VICTOR HUGO ZAYAS

Victor Hugo Zayas is one of the most sought-after artists in Southern California, with two major retrospectives, the first at the Laguna Art Museum and the second at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach.

A graduate of Art Center in Pasadena, as a young painter, Zayas fell in love with the city of Los Angeles choosing urban scenes as his first subjects, painting plein air under the East L.A. Bridges. Years later his city evolved through his canvases to express abstract movements, the comings and goings of airplanes from LAX, and gestural interpretations of the nature he explored while living in a sprawling warehouse along the L.A. River.

Zayas is interested in the majestic nestled amongst the everyday. The cosmos as a reflection of home and hearth. Citing Carl Sagan as an influence, he references the famous quote, “Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us.” All of Zayas’s paintings reflect the coupling of the large with the humble, grand with the serene.

Zayas has shown across Southern California including prestigious museums such as the MOLAA (Long Beach, CA), Latino Art Museum (Claremont, CA), the Contemporary Museum of Art (Mexico City, Mexico), and the Orange County Museum of Art (Newport Beach, CA). His work forms a part of important corporate and private collections from Washington DC to Sydney to Hong Kong.
