ABOUT KATIE STUBBLEFIELD

Her structural oil paintings are inspired by the uptick in super-sized weather systems, spontaneous planetary fluctuations, and man-made interventions and manipulations. Stubblefield’s imagery is informed by site visits, forensic photography, and first-hand accounts of these environments. Stubblefield takes visual cues for her imagery from diagnostic tools found on both the internet and television, as well as physical evidence found and documented on-site. Not only does she photograph and video events in real-time, but she records aftermath visuals of discarded trees, knotted rebar, chunked concrete, mangled clothes, deconstructed architecture, and disused vehicle parts, interwoven, tangled, and refigured in space. Her work is an effort to make sense of the intersection of man and nature and to make a symphonic harmony of both.

Katie Stubblefield (b. 1966, Cookeville, Tennessee) lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her BFA from Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, and an MFA from California State University, Long Beach in 2001. She is an adjunct professor teaching art survey courses to adults with intellectual disabilities and autism at Coastline College.
