ABOUT LUIS CORNEJO
Luis Cornejo recently explained about this series, “I have been envisioning my characters as explorers but not outward explorers, inward explorers - traversing an inner world that is at times wild and unknown. In some regions of this world, the landscape looks like a cartoon, in other places, it is overrun with flowers. Some of these explorers are equipped with tools such as headlamps or accompanied by some species of plant or animals...I also feel strongly about the viewer making their own narrative, interpretation, and relationship with the character.”
With a decade of sold-out shows, Cornejo’s whit and whimsy has found a worldwide audience. His ability to masterfully combine acrylic and oil, using layers of super flat mixed with hyper-realism to create a work of pop with Renaissance sensibilities, has connected Cornejo as a painter to a number of different styles. In the end, it is difficult to pin him down which speaks to his talent not only as a visual storyteller but also an artist pushing figurative painting forward.
Cornejo has exhibited individually and collectively in Nicaragua, Panama, El Salvador, Mexico, Canada, and Germany. Cornejo’s career has skyrocketed in recent years, with a one-year paid scholarship to Berlin (2009-10), top awards from the Museum of Art, MARTE in 2008 a well as the National Art Awards in 2003 and 2001.
