ABOUT THE WORK
The art of kintsugi is inextricably linked to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi: a worldview centered on the acceptance of transience, imperfection, and the beauty found in simplicity. Meaning “to join with gold”, the practice is a reminder to stay optimistic when things fall apart and to celebrate the flaws and missteps of life. In this piece, Villatoro has used the symbolism of kintsugi to join together various pieces of baroque and pop-culture glitches, unique to his work, as a way of joining the past and present and to approach the idea of inner and outer worlds containing different levels of imperfection which, when viewed as a whole, are wonderous.
ABOUT ORLANDO VILLATORO
Currently pursuing a master’s degree in game design, Salvadorian artist Orlando Villatoro encounters what he perceives as "glitches" constantly, both in the digital world and IRL (in real life). Glitches to him are occurrences of beauty, collisions within ourselves that define us as individuals. In his paintings, Villatoro collides hundreds of years of art and pop, layering them together in interesting and unexpected ways. To him, it is all a reflection of the nature of being human.
