ABOUT WILLIAM ACOSTA
William Acosta is interested in the intersection of memory, perception, and identity. He has a strong connection to the architectural styles of his native Cuba, with a particular interest in the modernist designs of homes built in the late 40’s and 50’s. Midcentury masterpieces, designed by architects such as Ricardo Porro and Frank Martínez, are set in the hills behind the Havana Forest in a neighborhood called Vedado. This area has become the inspiration for an exploration of longing and belonging. The once-polished post-and-beam homes with their large plate-glass windows were once an expression of the future. Now worn by time, reclaimed by nature, and stripped by human hands, they remain still elegant and ghost-like.
In Acosta’s paintings, the past and the present co-exist. By layering the past and present with photorealistic skill and sepia tones, Acosta touches on a very particular emotion that certain memories invoke, elusive but universal.
His works are part of private collections in Cuba, the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Austria, Colombia, Mexico, Russia, Lebanon, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Panama, Peru, and Chile.
