ABOUT WILLIAM ACOSTA
William Acosta is interested in the intersection of memory, identity, and possibility. He has a strong connection to the architecture of his native Cuba, with a particular interest in homes built in the late 40’s to mid 50’s. Midcentury masterpieces, designed and built in a boom time for Cuba when the future glittered. The once-polished post-and-beam homes with their large plate-glass windows reflected opportunity. Reclaimed by nature and stripped by human hands, these homes remain still elegant and ghost-like. The plate-glass windows reflect the overgrowth of time.
By layering the past and present with photorealistic skill and sepia tones, Acosta touches on a very particular emotion that certain memories invoke, elusive but universal. The stripped homes with their still recognizable design are a reminder of what once was, but also of what could still be. They are hope and remembrance, both a sunrise and a sunset.
Acosta graduated from the prestigious Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in Havana. His works are part of private collections in Cuba, the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Austria, Colombia, Mexico, Russia, Lebanon, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Panama, Peru, and Chile.
