ABOUT CHARLIE ALSTON

Charlie Alston is an artist emersed in the world. Born in San Francisco in 1997, Alston has found his way to New York, Paris, Spain, Germany, back to New York, and most recently to Los Angeles, where he has established a studio along the unofficial arts boulevard of downtown, Sante Fe Ave. To engage in Charlie Alston’s work is to take in layers of influence from at times wildly different sources. The cherrywood smell of his father’s tobacco pipe represented by a ferocity of mark-making, purposefully juxtaposed with the restrained wit of words and the structural considerations of fashion and architecture.

The idea of façade and restraint combined with bravery, opportunity, and joyful abandon is informed by being raised in a multicultural family, with elements of European and American black Southern culture stirred together in a way that Alston brings directly to his work. In his canvases, a wealth of sensory influence is evident; the sound of jazz playing from another room, Ebony magazine open on the table to an advert that reads “Greyhound’s in touch with America.” And there you have the subtle force of Alston’s compositions. The power of what we choose to keep for ourselves from media and culture, set on its side, taken apart and examined with curiosity and love, and placed back together as visual poetry. The manifestation of a sense of place in time and space, and the ability of art to produce emotion, is what drives Alston to create, and he does so with an authenticity and openness that people are naturally drawn to.

Charlie Alston’s work is held in numerous prestigious private collections internationally, inviting appreciation from collectors and art lovers around the globe. Starting in middle school, Alston has won prestigious residencies and competitions. His work has been exhibited in California, New York, Spain, Paris, and Germany.
