Drawing requires a different sense of draftsmanship than painting. Art-psychologically speaking, drawing is the most “grounding” of all media, the direct application of medium to surface. Johan Barrio’s drawings are often displayed unpretentiously on the perforated page of sketchbook paper they were created on, emphasizing the more technical aspects of drawing and the intimacy of the artist’s studio. The process of starting from a neutral ground— that is, a surface toned with graphite powder, carbon dust, or other media— allows Barrios to achieve the rich value structure in his work. Fascinated by the idea of figural composition, Barrios introduces a number of graphic elements in different ways to interact with or become part of the figures in ways that are both awkward and fearless. In a more subtle way than Escher, his drawings elicit a formal, but playful relationship between what is visually possible and impossible.
