ABOUT DENNIS EKSTOM

Dennis Ekstrom (1944–2011) was an abstract painter whose work grew from a lifelong fascination with the physical possibilities of paint. After spending much of his early career in his family’s industrial paint-manufacturing business, Ekstrom eventually left the company to devote himself fully to art, establishing a studio in Laguna Canyon that became part of the area’s vibrant creative community. His extensive knowledge of paint chemistry became central to his practice, leading him to experiment with texture, drying processes, and unconventional surfaces. Ekstrom embraced a balance between intention and chance, developing richly layered paintings in which fissures and crackled surfaces emerged organically as the materials dried. Suggestive of weathered earth, fractured stone, aged porcelain, and geological formations, his paintings transform the effects of time and material instability into elegant abstractions, reflecting both the experimental spirit and material sophistication of Southern California painting.
