ABOUT SCOUT BENDER

Scout is heavily influenced by his upbringing, having been raised on the mountainside of the Island of Oahu. Scout says of that place, “There is a humbleness and peace that is made with the land that is millions of years older than you. It’s an island with a story and history. Volcanoes grew the island layer by layer out of the ocean. Land and water allowed for the volcanic soil to grow lush green vegetation.”

ABOUT THE WORK

Interactions, adaptations, and evolutions brought this painting to life. In collaboration with my brother Paxton (Tag name Onion) we sought to find ourselves on a piece of panel salvaged from the dumpster. The panel we found had a history. LCAD students had drawn characters and things relevant to them with whatever medium they had on hand. With space limited in the college, the panel was found in the dumpster and repurposed for our own ideas for it. A drawing of my brother was transformed by his hand. Characters created from unknown hands were covered or emphasized. My drawing of Paxton was edited by his own ideas of himself. Shapes, lines, colors, symbols, and the unification of another's hand created a discussion between me, him and the present world we live within. What he chose to cover I chose to reveal and all of it influenced by the past and present.
